Olympic lifts involve very high power outputs, high rates of force production and large amounts of muscular coordination, including the combination of ankle, knee and hip extension.

When properly executed, the snatch and the clean and jerk are two of my favorite dynamic and explosive exercises for enhancing power in endurance athletes, but they do require a good bit of instruction to learn, and can be associated with an increased risk of exercise if performed improperly. If you already know how to be doing Olympic lifts, then you should be doing them, and if not, look to a resource such as Dan John , or a local qualified weightlifting coach to teach you correct form.

But you don't have to know the snatch and the clean and jerk to get the benefits of speed-strength training. Other ballistic, explosive exercises that don't involve quite as much coaching or as steep a learning curve, include:. Yes, that can be tough for the go-go mentality of an endurance athlete, but you literally do a lift explosively with perfect form, set the bar down, walk away, come back and do the lift again.

If you're accustomed to high rep, medium weight, bodybuilding or Crossfit style weight training, this may seem much different than what you're used to, but this is what it takes to maximize power production. These type of workouts should begin to replace traditional strength workouts the closer you get to your race and the plan you'll get access to as part of this book will show you exactly how to structure your season for proper workout timing.

You may have already been aware of the benefits of plyometric exercises and explosive weightlifting just described. But it is slightly less well known that combining traditional strength and explosive exercises results in greater muscle fiber recruitment and even faster improvements in power and rate of force development 1. Examples of Complex Training include:. The difference between the type of strength sets that you perform in a Complex Training vs. For example, you go heavy on the first set, rest briefly, then progress to the next set, then finally rest long and I'm a big fan of maximizing your time and doing the mobility work that I will be discussing later in this chapter during those rest periods.

For example:. Just like power workouts, Complex Training should be used more than traditional strength training as you get closer to your race. When it comes to power, the most important consideration from a food standpoint is the support of your nervous system, since the speed with which your nerves communicate will directly influence the speed of your brain speaking to your muscles, and vice versa.

The three best ways to accomplish this are via omega-3 fatty acid intake, amino acid intake and B-complex vitamin intake. Your nerves are wrapped in sheaths called myelin sheaths, and a diet for power should be comprised of specific nutrients that support the formation of these myelin sheaths, and also the health of the nervous system as a whole.

The reason I recommend omega-3 fatty acids especially docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA is because they are particularly important in building these sheath structures surrounding nerves Flax seeds and walnuts are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, but the amount of DHA actually absorbed from seeds and nuts is relatively low. Very good sources of more readily available omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, sardines, cloves, grass-fed beef, halibut, shrimp, cod, tuna, kale, collard greens, and winter squash.

In addition, activity in your nerves is carried out with special messaging molecules called neurotransmitters — and in most cases, these neurotransmitters are amino acids or derivatives of amino acids 8.

For this reason, optimal protein intake along with balanced intake of amino acids from food or supplement sources can also be very helpful in supporting your nervous system. Some of the best high amino acid protein sources for your nervous system include grass-fed beef, wild salmon, eggs from pastured chickens, raw organic dairy, almond and almond butter, quinoa, and spirulina or chlorella sources. You'll learn much more about the best protein sources for endurance athletes in the nutrient density section of the nutrition part of this book.

Finally, in order for the nervous system to synthesize and circulate these neurotransmitters, you need to have adequate intake of B complex vitamins, and Vitamins B6, B12, and folate are especially important in nerve metabolism Excellent food sources of vitamin B6 include bell peppers, turnip greens, and spinach; excellent sources of folate include spinach, parsley, broccoli, beets, turnip and mustard greens, asparagus, romaine lettuce, calf's liver, and lentils, and excellent sources of B12 include calf's liver and snapper.

The following are my top recommended supplements for building power as quickly as possible, and most are based on the same nervous system supporting philosophy as my food recommendations. As soon as you take it, choline makes its way to the brain and increases focus, muscle contractibility, and even memory formation allowing you to form new neural circuits for learning complex activities such as multi-joint lifts.

Interestingly, when you take it in lower doses throughout the day which would be fine to do by simply including choline rich foods such as walnuts, fish and eggs the choline is used for methyl donation, which is enormously important for sustaining your metabolism throughout the day, and the combo of this and the brain benefits are why choline supplementation is one of the most highly recommended supplements to slow or reverse the neurological decline associated with aging In some studies, choline has been linked to increased endurance performance.

I personally get my daily dose of choline from the Chinese adaptogenic herb complex TianChi. L-tyrosine is a naturally occurring amino acid that is the precursor to the neurotransmitter adrenaline also known as epinephrine.

So L-tyrosine is not only able to increase levels of adrenaline in the body quite handy prior to a power workout , but can also protect neurons from free radical based oxidation by embedding itself in the cell membrane and acting as an anti-oxidant 4. Brands vary. Although all of these catechins share similar brain-boosting properties, EGCG appears to be most potent for elevated brain and neuronal activity 5.

Because of the high amount of brewed green tea you'd need to drink prior to a workout to get the equivalent of mg EGCG a rough rule of thumb is that one cup of green tea contains only about 50mg of EGCG , I'm a fan of edible green tea , which you can simply grab out of a bag and munch on prior to a workout.

There are several forms of Vitamin B that are helpful for power development. Niacin niacinamide has been shown to help maintain normal function of nerves. Vitamin B6 pyridoxine HCl is necessary for the production of the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, and adrenaline, and plays an essential role in healthy nervous system function and energy production.

Folate folic acid is essential for proper brain function. Vitamin B12 cyanocobalamin is the most potent of the Vitamin B complex. It maintains a healthy nervous system by helping to maintain the myelin sheath that insulates your nerve fibers, and has been shown to help heal nerve damage.

Finally, pantothenic acid d-calcium pantothenate plays a key role in helping maintain precise communication between your central nervous system and brain, which is crucial to functions such as powerful muscle contractions and reaction speed. I personally use a supplement called Lifeshotz to get a full Vitamin B dose in one convenient packet although I tend to more often take this prior to swim workouts because of the antioxidant effect against chlorine. Incidentally, for a cool little self-test to determine whether or not a food or supplement is having an effect on your nervous system, you can try the CNS Tap Test phone app to track nervous system performance.

If you're serious about building power, you'll also want to to have proper gear around for plyometric and speed-strength training. Here are some of my top power gear recommendations many gyms actually this stuff lying around under-utilizing in a dark corner somewhere. You can usually snag power racks for a decent deal off Craigslist — and if your gym doesn't have a single power rack, you should consider finding a new gym. Athletes such as tennis and soccer players, who rely on speed, quick movement and ability to change direction at the last second are not the only individuals who can benefit from agility ladder workouts and drills.

Because of the ability of agility ladders to teach you reduced ground contact time and increase your explosiveness from ground contact, endurance athletes can benefit from these too.

Here's a good, free list of agility ladder drills to get you started. You simply can't build much power without a little space to train, and some elevated surfaces to jump on and off. If a weight vest is too heavy, you'll slow your pace down too much, and then your weighted vest workouts become more of a strength or endurance routine — and there are more efficient methods to build strength and endurance.

Use a vest that fits tight to your body and allows you to move quickly without the vest bouncing around on your chest and back.

Similar to a weight vest, you don't need a heavy load, just a light load that you can move quickly. If you don't have a sled, you can put a few weight plates on a towel and push them from one end of a hard surface like a basketball court to the other.

This specific brand of cable is the most powerful resistance cable you can get, and you can change from one cable resistance to three cable resistance in just a few seconds.

So, if you are using the lightest cable, you can go from 10 to 20 to 30 lbs of resistance in seconds and for the heaviest cables you can go from to lbs of resistance in seconds. These are good for resisted sprints and explosive upper body work. So this section of the chapter will go fast, pun intended. Let's go back to the definition of power, in case you need a quick review: power is the ability to generate high amounts of force over a short period of time.

Speed is force independent. As long as you do something quickly, then congratulations — you're speedy. In this case, you were able to move your hand over a set distance in a very short period of time. A perfect example of a training protocol for increasing speed is the Overspeed Training you learned about in Chapter 3.

So during speed training, your brain learns how to fire faster and control your muscles more efficiently at higher speeds, and you also develop more powerful and quick muscle fiber contractions, which comes in handy for hard surges during a race or tough workout 3.

Ideally, by learning how to move your body parts quickly, you can also move your entire body over a set distance in a very short period of time. And from a muscle efficiency and recruitment standpoint, you've already learned why this is important, even if you're a marathoner and not a m sprinter. Training strategies for increasing speed go hand-in-hand with strategies for maximizing power production, with the caveat that you need even less weight than you need for power training.

You simply get reduced benefits from adding external loads like heavy vests and heavy weights, as they diminish your ability to maintain a high turnover and to maximize neuromuscular recruitment. In addition to keeping loads light enough to where you can move your body or body parts as quickly as possible, the other crucial rules for speed training are:.

Your neuromuscular system is very fatigue prone, and, similar to power training, needs not to have been exhausted by a hard endurance training workout or strength workout earlier in the day. So a set of fast downhill overspeed runs at the end of a long marathon training protocol is not a good idea but doing them before your long run would be a perfect way to prime your nervous system for faster leg turnover.

One of the biggest mistakes most coaches make with speed training is the timing, and even for team sports like football, basketball, and soccer, speed work is often done at the end of the practice, when the neuromuscular system is already fatigued. If you want to breathe hard, do metabolic work, or train your cardiovascular system, then go do swimming, cycling, running, rowing or any of form of interval training.

Speed simply requires brief doses of low volume, fast work. If you're exhausting yourself metabolically, it becomes very difficult to train your nervous system. If you're not forced to be thinking hard during a speed workout, it's probably not challenging your nervous system.

This is why overspeed training on a bicycle is not done at 80 or 90rpm. For sample speed workouts, simply refer back to the overspeed section of Chapter 3. Medicine ball slams are a great upper-body exercise. Start with the ball directly overhead.

Swing the arms downward to slam the ball into the ground as forcefully as possible. The core is forced to react quickly to stabilize the effort and the shoulders perform movement dynamically. Similar to a jump, the kettlebell swing works wonders towards developing the posterior chain. Commonly performed improperly, the swing is not a squat but rather a hip hinge. To get it right, bend at the hips, and then forcefully contract the glutes and hamstrings to thrust the bell forward.

On the descent, brace the core, hinge at the hips, and recoil for another explosive contraction. The rotational throw is perfect for developing power in the transverse plane.

Used by many athletes, this throw helps with core stabilization, hip power, and shoulder strength. Stand perpendicular to a wall with an underhand grip on the ball, twist at the hips away from the wall, and then rotate through the hips to throw the ball at the wall as hard as possible. Catch the rebound and repeat. Load up the prowler and perform short sprints. This not only develops starting speed for sprinters and athletes, but also adds strength to deadlifts and squats.

With consistent use of this medieval piece of metal, you might just add a little mass to those bird legs. Perform power movements early in the workout following a proper warm-up and complete sets of reps. Lower-body power exercises should be performed on lower body days and upper body power movements during upper body training sessions. Try this three-day split:. Already have a Bodybuilding. Sign In.

Instructional Videos Don't risk doing a workout improperly! Its popularity has stemmed from its simplicity, flexibility, and ability to be run over and over for long periods of time.

It favors slow, steady, repeatable progression over the long term instead of programs that pile on the weight for a few weeks or months before progress grinds to a halt. It has a fair amount of heavy singles followed by back off volume and accessories. It looks like a lot of fun to run.

These are tried and true fully body training plans that will help you get stronger by exposing you to heavy weights and letting you add weight on a regular basis and build muscle.

Ivysaur is another solid pick. Intermediate level lifters may benefit from training 4 or 5 days per week in order to achieve the necessary stimulus to disrupt homeostasis and induce adaptation in the necessary muscle groups. It really depends on how the program is designed and what its goals are. Often times a powerlifting program is associated with a peaking program, which specifically aims to increase the one rep max on the squat, bench press, and deadlift. A strength program is less likely to focus on peaking.

It also may focus less on strict competition lifts and may incorporate more variations of those lifts, like front squats, incline bench press, Romanian deadlifts, etc. Of course, all of those lifts can be used to help increase powerlifting performance too.

At the end of the day, every powerlifting program is a strength program, but not every strength program may be ideal for powerlifting. Home » Programs » Strength Training Program.

Simulation Model The simulation model described here has been presented, in considerable detail, by Yavuzturk and Spitler A brief description will be presented in this paper. The model is primarily aimed at appli- cations in building energy analysis, where it is desirable to be able to predict system energy consumption on an hourly basis. For short duration heat pulses, heat transfer within the borehole and heat transfer outside the borehole, in the radial direction, are much more important than heat transfer in the axial direction.

Hence, a two-dimensional, radial-angular, finite volume model has been developed. Complete details may be found in Yavuzturk, et al. The numerical model is used to calculate the average fluid temperature in the borehole.. This is then adjusted by the borehole resistance to determine the average temperature at the borehole wall and then non-dimensionalized to form a g-function. The resulting short time-step g-function curve matches well at the boundary to the long time-step g-functions developed by Eskilson, as shown in Figure 3.

Loads that occurred more recently are treated as hourly pulses. This approach gives significantly reduced computational time, while maintaining very good accuracy. The load aggregation procedure is given in more detail in the paper by Yavuzturk and Spitler Experimental validation of the model is described in detail by Yavuzturk and Spitler Standing Column Well Standing column wells are used for direct i. Figure 4 il- lustrates the configuration of a standing column well and the heat and mass transfer mechanisms.

A nu- merical model has been developed for studying the performance of the standing column wells, which is composed of two parts: a nodal model of the borehole components and a finite volume model of the ground-water flow and heat transfer in the surrounding rock. This model allows the explicit treatment of the advective heat transfer induced by the ground-water flow Rees, et al.

More recent work Deng has focused on development of a simpler, much faster model, suitable for use in energy analysis programs or design programs. Figure 4: Standing column well 2. Water Source Heat Pump Jin and Spitler developed a parameter-estimation-based water-to-water heat pump model. This model used a thermodynamic analysis of the refrigeration cycle, simplified heat exchanger models, and a detailed model of the refrigerant reciprocating compressor.

Jin described in detail the multi-variable optimization and the estimated parameters. Jin also presented an analogous model for water-to-air heat pumps. Shenoy developed a simpler but faster equation-fit type model for water-to-air heat pumps.

Supplemental Heat Rejecters for Hybrid GSHP Systems The cost of drilling the borehole field for a ground-source heat pump system, although it depends strongly on the local geological conditions, can often be a substantial portion of the system capital cost.

This is most likely in buildings where the demand is predominantly for cooling. In situations like this and where the thermal conductivity of the ground is low or drilling conditions are poor, the cost of the bore- hole field may make a ground-source system uneconomical.

However, a compromise between first cost and energy efficiency may be possible by using a smaller borehole field and adding a supplemental heat rejecter into the heat pump water loop. A number of different types of heat rejecters have been suggested for inclusion in the water loop of hybrid systems, including cooling tower, shallow pond with heat exchanger, and hydronically heated pavement or bridge deck.

The shallow pond model has been developed by Chiasson, et al. Chiasson, et al. This model has been further developed to be able to model the snow melting process taking place on the top surface of the slab Liu, et, al.

These models have been validated using data from a number of experimental supplemental heat rejecters at Oklahoma State University.

In such cases the ground temperature may rise or fall over a number of years, resulting in a decrease in the performance of the heat pump as the entering fluid tem- perature to the heat pump rises or falls. A design goal must therefore be to control the change in the temperature within acceptable limits over the life of the system. The net heating or cooling of the ground over each season clearly depends on the accumulated heat rejection and extraction, and therefore on the building loads throughout the whole year.

The design meth- odology has to be based then on the building loads calculated throughout the whole year, not just the peak heating and cooling loads. Hence more information is required regarding the building loads than for siz- ing of a conventional system.

Design methodologies available for residential ground loop heat exchangers have been reviewed by Cane and Forgas Yavuzturk provides a more up-to-date review of all available methodolo- gies.

Kavanaugh described a design procedure commonly used in the United States. A design methodology that utilizes the simulation procedures described in Section 2 is covered in de- tail by Spitler However, the peak heat extraction or rejection pulse has been modeled with a simpler analytical approximation.

The design methodology has been implemented in a commercially available software package Spit- ler , Assuming a given borehole depth, and the above information, the average fluid temperature in the GLHE at the end of each month, the entering fluid temperature at the end of each month, and the actual heat rejection rate for each month are determined simultaneously. Then, the responses to the peak pulses are determined for each month, and the resulting peak entering fluid temperatures to the heat pump s for each month are determined.

The program also has a sizing mode where the minimum borehole depth that will meet user-specified minimum and maximum peak temperatures is determined by searching with the simulation until the depth is found that is constrained by either the minimum or maximum peak entering fluid temperature. Hourly or shorter time steps may be used so that diurnal variations in loop temperature, time-of-day rates, etc. Ultimately, it is anticipated that this approach will be used to design GSHP systems.

To date, it has been primarily used for feasibil- ity studies and parametric investigations. Three types of sample applications are discussed below. With the supplemental heat rejecter s , the size of the ground loop heat exchanger may be reduced significantly. Perhaps the most obvious candidate for a supplemental heat rejecter in a hybrid system would be a conventional open-circuit cooling tower.

Yavuzturk and Spitler investigated a number of operat- ing strategies for an HGSHP system with a cooling tower, using the simulation methodology described above. One method investigated for controlling the cooling tower was to switch on the cooling tower only when a certain heat pump entering water temperature was exceeded. It was found that this simple strategy does not result in the cooling tower operating during the most advantageous weather conditions.

A second strategy studied involved operating the cooling tower on a predetermined schedule. The most effective strategy was found to be one where the tower was controlled by the difference between the heat pump entering fluid temperature and the wet bulb temperature. This allows the cooling tower to be used under the most advantageous weather conditions where the potential is greatest for heat rejection.

For the climate conditions that were considered, this control strategy yields the lowest life cy- cle cost. Another possible supplemental heat rejecter is a pavement heat exchanger, consisting of pipes buried just below a road or other paved surface. In a recent study Khan et al. For the particular case examined here, the addition of a 36 m2 heated parking lot allowed a reduction in size of the GLHE from 16 to 9 boreholes, each 73 m deep.

With the addition of the parking lot heating system, operating costs decreased slightly and the system also per- formed some snow melting, reducing the number of hours that the parking lot would be snow-covered without other intervention from to Shallow ponds have also been suggested as possible heat rejecters for use in hybrid ground-source heat pump systems.

Where ponds are required for either landscaping, irrigation or flood control purposes it is relatively simple and cost effective to introduce additional pipe coils at the bottom of the pond con- nected into the loop with the borehole field.

A parametric study Ramamoorthy et al. Hybrid GSHP systems that use solar thermal collectors for diurnal and seasonal thermal underground energy storage have been studied Chiasson and Yavuzturk for applications in cold climates. The study models an actual school building with typical meteorological year weather data for a number of cit- ies with varying climates and insolation. The results of the study have shown that hybrid solar GSHP sys- tems are a viable choice for space conditioning of heating dominated buildings.

Building cooling may be provided by circulating water directly between the ground loop heat exchanger and chilled ceilings or beams. In this system, the heat extracted from the ground for heating is replaced during the cooling season, and cooling is provided at almost no cost. Spitler and Underwood pre- sented a simulation study of this application for a five-story office building in Newcastle.

Such a system can potentially offer improved road safety and increased bridge deck life. A number of heat sources have been proposed for such systems, including heat pipes, natural gas boilers and electric cables.

GSHP systems and hydronic-heating offer improved energy efficiency over other systems. Such systems consist of hydronic tubing embedded in the bridge deck with hot water circulated from a number of water-to-water heat pumps that, in turn, extract heat through the ground via vertical U-tube borehole heat exchangers, as shown in Figure 6. This geo- thermal bridge deck technology has been the subject of a recent research project at Oklahoma State Uni- versity. Application of geothermal bridge deck snow melting technology has been discouraged by higher ini- tial costs, but also lack of reliable design procedures, modeling methods and software tools.

The simulation results have been validated with operating data and corresponding weather data from a medium scale experimental bridge snow melting system that employed a GSHP system as heat source.

The validation results show the ability of this simulation approach to successfully predict the performance of the system under a wide range of operating and weather conditions. Since the design of a ground source heat pump system has many degrees of freedom, and the interaction between the design variables is relatively com- plex, automated optimization is a potentially useful tool for GSHP system design. Some preliminary work in this area has been presented by Khan and Spitler and Khan The first reference presents a study of residential systems, where a few variables are optimized at any one time.

The detailed system simulation accounts for the effects of antifreeze concentration, entering fluid temperature and flow rate on heat pump capacity. Mass flow rate in the system was solved for every time step and varied with the fluid transport properties, which depended on temperature and antifreeze concentration.

Life cycle cost was chosen as the objective function. Optimizing a few variables at a time allowed the determination, for ex- ample, of optimal GLHE size and antifreeze concentration, if all other variables were held constant.

Khan reported on an attempt to simultaneously optimize all variables using both a particle swarm optimization algorithm and the Hooke-Jeeves algorithm. Ultimately, these attempts met with lim- ited success — in order to be confident that the constraints on freezing and unmet loads were really and truly met, it was necessary to perform a multi-year e.

Future work with larger time steps in the early years may facilitate optimization, but no conclu- sion has yet been reached as to the potential for reductions in life cycle cost due to optimal design. Models of the main components of the GSHP system are now available. The long-term and short- term performance of the ground-loop heat exchanger can be predicted.

The performance of the standing column well can be predicted with a numerical model. In addition, models of water source heat pump and different forms of supplemental heat rejecter have also been developed.

By utilizing these component models in a modular simulation environment, a number of previously impractical simulations have been performed. These simulations have been applied in the design a variety of hybrid ground source heat pump systems.

Parametric studies performed with these simulations have led to new insights about system design. A procedure for the design of vertical closed-loop ground heat exchangers has been developed from the earlier work of Eskilson. The procedure takes account of the cumulative effect of the building loads rejected to and extracted from the ground loop on its long-term performance.

With this procedure, the required length of the boreholes can be calculated to maintain the heat pump entering fluid temperature within its design limits over the life of the project.

Preliminary attempts at automated optimization have yielded only modest successes. Additional work in the near future should, at least, indicate more clearly what potential savings in life cycle cost might be achieved with optimal design procedures.

Here is a nice variety of games you can play on old hardware, without feeling like your gaming in If you are worried about overburdening your teeny little laptop with oodles worth of application memory, any game that can alternatively be played on mobile is always a safe bet.

Among Us has won itself a spot as king among fun multiplayer games. It can even be played cross-platform, so your friend can plot your demise from behind their iPhone screen. A clever take on old favorites like Wolf or Town of Salem , you and up to 15 friends are crewing a spaceship.

The catch? One of you is "The Imposter", possessed by an alien entity with a bloodlust. Crew can save the day by completing all their ship tasks or catching the killer in the act. The result is cartoonish finger-pointing madness with friends, making Among Us a great pick for laptop users.

Just because you are playing on a laptop does not mean you are stuck playing Solitaire or Minesweeper. For those searching for a massively online game with a taste for high stakes and adventure, Fortnite is a great pick. Its unique, slightly cartoonish style makes it more compatible with PCs with lower graphic capabilities. Anyone who plays the game more competitively would argue that playing on the lowest graphic settings is less than ideal, but for the casual gamer, it neither makes nor breaks the experience.

Fortnite Battle Royale is free-to-play and cross-platform, perfect for the occasional late-night gaming session with your pals.

You might be thinking to yourself, why would anyone want to play a game published in ? Few games have aged as well as The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim , in all of its often-times glitched and ragdoll glory.

It might seem counterintuitive, but despite the limits of its original time, Skyrim is still a very well-rounded open-world adventure. If your aim is to disappear inside a vast and boundless fantasy world, with a deeply customizable personal experience, then there is no reason not to love Skyrim.

Slay dragons, pick fights with NPCs, or become an infamous chicken murderer. For testing I tried them all on my wife's three year old laptop that only has Intel integrated graphics.

This may still be more modern than your average old laptop, but it's not a gaming machine by any means. If you're still unsure, you can download demos of many of the games, and Can You Run It is also a good place to check to see if your gear is up to snuff. Oxenfree from Night School Studio is a must-have on any system, and thanks to its minimalistic, yet very stunning graphics and animation designed by Disney alumni, it is ideal for your older laptop.

You play as the protagonist Alex, a teenage girl on an overnight excursion with friends to a mysterious island that used to be a World War II military base. The kids accidentally open a spirit gate and encounter ghosts and discover otherworldly messages from the past. The real draw of the game is the conversation system, as every conversation can change the course of the narrative.

You will spend the majority of the time exploring the island and trying to find a way to close the ghostly rift. The puzzle elements are challenging but not too hard. The gameplay might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the story is what really drives the game.

As its name implies, FTL puts you at the helm of your own faster-than-light starship. The game plays from a top-down perspective showing your craft's various compartments or rooms. Each of your ships five systems, Sheilds, Engines, Medbay, Oxygen, and Weapons, are housed in these rooms and are run by your crew. Your overarching mission is to deliver "data" to the Federation, but you will have many encounters along the way, some friendly and most not so friendly.

To make matters worse, as you jump at light speed from system to system, you will have a Rebel fleet dogging your trail. If it catches up to you, your ship will be destroyed. FTL battles take place in real-time, but you can pause to strategize and give your crew commands. You will always have something to do, whether it be managing your ship's systems or commanding your crew to make repairs or fight boarding parties.

The game is very challenging even on easy difficulty because every game is randomly generated. We played for 27 hours and were never able to reach the Federation, but every playthrough was unique and fun.

Although the game is still in early access, Factorio is a well-functioning game worth your time. In a way, it is similar to SimCity, except instead of building streets and buildings, you create conveyor belts and factories. You will collect resources and construct everything by hand at first, but as you progress, your factories will become more and more complex and automated.

However, building a massive manufacturing empire while raping the world of resources makes enemies with the alien populous — "Spitters," "Biters," and "Worms. Developer Wube Software has the official release slated for September 25, , but don't let that stop you from buying the very stable and virtually complete build right now.

When first-person shooter Borderlands launched in , developer Gearbox marketed it as having "87 bazillion" different guns. In actuality, the game's "Procedural Content Creation System" is capable of randomly generating over 3. It also provides each weapon with a slightly unique look.

While primarily a shooter, the game has a rich RPG-like character development system allowing players to customize one of four classes, each with unique abilities and skill trees. These elements combined with vehicular combat, open-world environment, a multitude of side quests, and an adaptive four-player multiplayer cooperative mode makes Borderlands a title that you can revisit multiple times with each new playthrough seeming fresh.

Untitled Goose Game from indy publisher Panic Inc is a more recent title. Players assume the role of a pesky town goose. The town is split up into sections with each having a set of missions or tasks to complete, like stealing items or tricking villagers into doing something. The game combines stealth and puzzle elements and oddly enough developer House House said it drew inspiration from Mario 64 and the Hitman series.

With its simplistic graphics, it is easy to let this game fly under your radar, but its gameplay is fun and silly enough to make it a good pick for lower-end systems. Its only real flaw is that it is too short. Most players can complete it in a couple of hours. Hotline Miami is a top-down shooter initially launched by Devolver Digital in You play as an unnamed protagonist fans refer to as "Jacket" in Miami. The game is divided into Chapters, with each having several stages. Missions begin with a phone message that ultimately has Jacket facing off with a Russian Mafia operation.

The goal is always to gruesomely eliminate all the bad guys in that location. Starting each stage unarmed, Jacket must use stealth, at least until he finds a gun or melee weapon.

He also has access to masks, which can be found on bodies. Each disguise comes with unique buffs to help get through the stage. While it is an action game, it is also somewhat puzzle-oriented in that players must figure out how to complete areas without being killed, which is not easy. If you can't get the jump on an enemy, you will likely perish and have to start the level again.

Its structure makes it great for playing in short bursts, like while you are waiting to board at the airport. Despite its cartoonish, beautiful graphics, Cuphead is one of the more taxing games on the list, both on your hardware and your sanity. Studio MDHR's bullet-hell is one that many have found frustratingly difficult, so it's not for everyone. However, once you get the hang of its levels after dying many, many times , it becomes addicting.

The sense of relief and satisfaction after completing a stage is a suitable payoff. You play as either Cuphead or his brother Mugman. The style is reminiscent of the old "visit-the-snackbar" animations with their anthropomorphic popcorn and sodas dancing around. Coupled with its cool soundtrack, the game makes for a fun experience whether you are watching someone else die or you are playing yourself.

Perhaps one of the more underrated titles on the list, the Hack series consists of three hacker simulators from developer i — Hack Run, Hack Run Zero, and Hack Time. They harken back to the days of text adventures, so you can literally run them on anything.

The games put players in the shoes of a hacker who receives an "offer' from a strange "employer" that seems to know more than it should about his or her skills. The story plays out from a command line prompt as you infiltrate a mysterious corporation snooping on emails, running scripts, and uncovering clues to delve deeper and deeper.

The puzzles can be quite challenging at times, requiring a very keen attention to detail. It is easy to miss clues as the text scrolls off the screen, but diligence pays off, and it is quite satisfying when you crack some of the more security-hardened systems. If all else fails, i added a hint system in the most recent updates for those who get stuck. Honorable Mention: Uplink Buy it from: Steam. Released in , Half-Life remains a classic that has been updated and remade on multiple platforms.

The first-person shooter puts you in the shoes of Gordon Freeman, a scientist at a research facility known as Black Mesa. Thanks to an experiment gone wrong, Freeman finds himself battling creatures from another dimension. The dystopian sequel, Half-Life 2, is set six years after the dimensional rift caused by the Black Mesa Incident.

With such a massive library of games available for PC players to choose from, it shouldn't come as a surprise that this roundup is missing many worthy games. We've limited our picks to 25 games, but this list isn't static. As more great PC games are released, we'll continue to highlight fresh experiences that we think show off what makes PC gaming so great, whether you play on Steam or another platform.

And because you can often find better deals on PC games at stores like Fanatical and GOG, we've included links to those stores where available as well. Sign up for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

We've called Apex Legends the champion of battle royales in the past, and two years into its lifespan, that's something we stand by. Respawn Entertainment took its strong FPS foundation namely Titanfall and created a competitive shooter that refines all the core tenets necessary for a good battle royale.

Its roster of characters adds a strategic layer and diversity of playstyle, gunplay is sharp and engaging, and quality-of-life features like the ping system and inventory management keep you focused on executing in combat. Over the many seasons of content for Apex Legends, we've had multiple maps and game modes cycle into the experience.

It has surprisingly deep lore that gets you invested in the world of Apex Legends, too. And because it's free-to-play, you have nothing to lose by giving it a shot. See our Apex Legends review. First released in the '90s, Sid Meier's Civilization series is still going strong in , thanks to continued support for its most recent release, Civilization VI. As in previous games, Civilization VI casts you in the role of a historical leader, such as Egypt's Cleopatra or India's Gandhi, and tasks you with building your civilization from the ground up, including growing your military, developing new research facilities, and engaging in diplomacy with other world leaders.

Of course, Civilization VI expanded and improved on previous games in the series, with additions such as the inclusion of districts that let cities expand across multiple tiles, but it's also continued to receive new content in the form of two major expansions: Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm, both of which added new leaders, civilizations, and features to the game. See our Civilization VI review. Control 's blend of action, mystique, and the surreal is one that should not be missed, and while it's available on PS5 and Xbox Series X, you'll find no version better than that of the PC.

The pairing of DLSS and ray-tracing makes Control a visual powerhouse, reflecting its impressive effects on the surface of the Oldest House's pristine waxed floors and shrouding its mysterious hallways in the uncertainty of shadow. And that's all accented by supernatural fights that can pop off at a moment's notice in any one of these enigmatic rooms as the world shifts and morphs around you.

What makes Control truly special is exploring the unknown and uncovering secrets the world isn't supposed to know. See our Control review. Though CSGO has undergone significant changes over its lifespan, it's still very much the core Counter-Strike experience that revolutionized the multiplayer FPS genre in the s.

The standard mode of play is a five-on-five demolition-style match on carefully crafted maps that emphasize specific positioning, sightlines, and team strategies. But beyond that, there's a hostage rescue mode, gungame free-for-all, and tons of custom content from years of work by its player base.

One of the most exciting things about CSGO is the high-intensity competitive matches where the slightest mistakes could spell doom for your team, or clutch plays could drastically shift the momentum of a match.

Counter-Strike has historically been played with a level of precision in both the FPS combat and in its tactics, which makes a bit of a steep learning curve for newcomers. However, this classic game can be wildly rewarding, which you can see from its massive competitive scene. Recently, Valorant has adopted the Counter-Strike formula to great effect, but the high-stakes tactical combat of CSGO is still in a league of its own.

See our Counter-Strike: Global Offensive review. Arkane Studios became the name to beat when it came to first-person shooter games that married well-crafted action with rich narratives, but Deathloop has raised the bar for those games to a glorious new level. Game of the year material at its best, Deathloop's homicidal Groundhog Day appeal is amplified by its terrific cast, layered levels of gameplay, hidden secrets, and so much more.

See our Deathloop review. Despite releasing more than three years ago, Destiny 2 remains one of the most popular live service multiplayer games around. While the sequel started off on a strong note, it has only gotten better thanks to consistent updates and expansions that delivered a steady stream of enthralling first-person shooter content.

And it's not even close to being too late to jump into Destiny 2, as multiple expansions are still incoming over the next two years. Destiny 2's plethora of content would be nothing without strong mechanics and overarching systems that keep you grinding away for new gear. Bungie crafted one of the best-feeling first-person shooters we've played in recent years, so it offers a constant source of fun regardless of whether you're making your way through story missions, going on challenging raids with friends, or battling in the Crucible.

It's a wonderful game that digs its teeth into you the more you play, and it's easily one of the best cooperative PC games available today. See our Destiny 2: Beyond Light review. When it comes to writing, Disco Elysium is perhaps unrivaled. His quest to unravel a baffling murder and the details of his life that he's forgotten takes you on an absolutely stunning adventure that thrives on its choice-based gameplay and exquisite dialogue. Disco Elysium balances humor and serious life dilemmas with astounding grace, and the freedom it gives you to shape the narrative and your interactions with its many colorful characters you meet allows you to make this detective story your own.

Its gorgeous world is teeming with life, and viewing it from the eyes of a nameless cop with memory issues makes it all the more immersive. See our Disco Elysium review. Building on the already-brilliant formula of its predecessor, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an all-time great RPG, giving you a huge range of freedom in how to build your party, deal with a combat scenario, and approach a given situation.

It's a game best played on PC, thanks to its crisper visuals, the precision of using a mouse, and faster loading times, which encourage you to experiment with its wide range of possibilities.

While truly a great game overall, much of the fun in Divinity stems from seeing what you can get away with, be it stealing items or avoiding a lengthy combat encounter by setting up an elaborate trap. Experience with earlier entries in the series aren't required to enjoy Original Sin 2, and as the best entry to date, this is an ideal place to start--just be prepared to lose dozens of hours to it.

See our Divinity: Original Sin 2 review. Dota 2 is not only one of the more daunting PC games to learn and master, but it's also one of the most rewarding and satisfying to play once you know what you're doing.

Super chill. Until you roll your rig down the side of a mountain, of course. Morgan: Snowrunner is the mud trucking sim of my dreams.

It's Death Stranding without all the drama and ghost babies: just you, your truck, and the stack of pipes that need to get to the top of this mountain. Snowrunner is no tranquil driving sim. Every job is a battle against nature itself and your weapons are wheels, winches, and will. In the year since launch, Snowrunner has only gotten bigger and better with quality DLC and a vibrant modding community.

Evan: Replicating the weapon set, map philosophy, and beautiful rhythm of Counter-Strike is some sort of scientific cloning accomplishment. Valorant is its own game, though, one with meaningful technical advancements it'll give you 90 fps on a graphing calculator, practically and magical character abilities that let you and your opponent make counter-punches with utility as you compete for precious positioning. Phil: I recently dipped back in with some pals after about a year away, and, oh boy, Valorant is a punishing game to return to.

But after a couple of demoralising losses, our third match—a nail biting win—was one of the most exciting multiplayer experiences I've had this year. Nat: Homeworld's tragic space opera is timeless, but its original release is a little less so. Thankfully, the Remastered Collection is still a fantastic way to experience a truly singular, unique spacefaring RTS—with a healthy modding scene that lets you recreate fleet battles from Star Trek to Mass Effect.

Fraser: There's no other RTS with this much style and grace. Homeworld is a spaceship ballet and epic tragedy that I never thought would be replicated—how could it be?

Homeworld 3 is coming, but will it live up to the impossibly lofty expectations set by its predecessors? Spin-off Deserts of Kharak certainly got close, but there's magic in those first two games that sets them apart. We'll see. Wes: I've returned to Vermintide this year and especially appreciate how each character plays so differently. My first time through I stuck to up-close-and-personal dwarf Bardin Goreksson, but lately I've played as battle mage Sienna, standing back and flamethrowing legions of low-level ratlings.

The equipment system still kinda feels like fluff, but I love that each character has three classes that play differently, and styles of weapons that add even more granularity. This is the co-op game to beat, even three years in. Steven: Caves of Qud is a near-perfect middle ground between the daunting complexity of classic roguelikes and the mind-boggling simulation of Dwarf Fortress.

It's also the weirdest RPG I've ever played. Sentient beanstalks, tinker bears, space-time paradoxes, fungal infections—it's almost impossible to describe Qud in a way that makes sense. Each time you start a new game, an entire world complete with its own cultures and history is generated for you to uncover. And within that space, you can play as anything from a desert nomad to a cybernetically enhanced half-man-half-tank.

Just play it. Wes: I've still barely just dipped my toe in Caves of Quid during Early Access, but it really was staggering; it feels like someone took on the mad idea of cramming RPG-style writing into the open-ended structure of NetHack, and actually pulled it off. Along with Disco Elysium, I think Caves of Qud is a modern reminder that good enough writing can make any game utterly captivating.

Harry: What else is left to say about Skyrim? Nothing, really. A decade on The Elder Scrolls V is a fixture in the PC gaming consciousness despite looking janky and dated, even with a choice selection of mods. Skyrim slips down the Top again this year, but don't expect it to be forgotten anytime soon.

Speaking of, The Forgotten City, based on a Skyrim mod has just come out, so it remains to be seen if it makes next year's list. Jody: In my current playthrough I have my own museum, a chainsword, and fabulous hair. The music's replaced by dark ambient and Nordic folk-metal, there are gallows and gibbets everywhere, and I have to periodically wash off blood and travel dirt.

I'm accompanied by two characters from Vermintide, a blue khajiit, and the Skyrim Grandma. The Special Edition means Skyrim handles ridiculous mod loads without instability, and I can alt-tab as much as I want without it crashing. It's better than ever. I'll be tired of Skyrim when I'm tired of life. Mollie: Skyrim is one of those games that's been there for me through a ton of high and low points in my life.

Will I ever branch out and play anything other than a stealthy archer? Hell no, but I will spend hours exploring the same old dinky caves and loading up my house with an unnecessary number of stolen books. Mollie: I've played my fair share of fighting games over the years, but few have kept me coming back in the way Tekken 7 does.

Every hit, block and sidestep feels so intensely satisfying to me. Couple that with a banging soundtrack, cinematic ultimate moves and a heart-pounding dramatic slow-mo cam, and every match feels like a full-blown theatrical performance. Though I still lament the lack of Christie Monteiro in the game, the roster is solid. Tekken 7 is easily the best 3D fighter out there right now, and my favourite fighting game in recent memory. Also Yoshimitsu is an alien, I guess?

Euro Truck Sim can take a breather. This son of a gun's packing Texas and Idaho, on the way to pick up Wyoming. You ever drive through through 'em? Vast, empty spaces. Buttes and scrub. Flimsy barbwire between state, federal, and private land. A couple mountain ranges in the western halves, Idaho panhandle too. Feeling that small centers a person. Kanye West lives in Wyoming. A recent multiplayer update means you can drive by Kayne's yard with a friend.

Nothing eases the weight of a heavy load, on the truck and the soul, like a convoy. Steady breath, eyes ahead. We'll get to where we're going. Andy K: ATS is great. But my heart belongs to Euro Truck Simulator 2. The larger map has a lot more variety, from the mountains of Norway to the vineyards of France, making for much more exciting road trips. Fraser: Cities: Skylines continues its reign, with few urban city builders appearing to steal its crown. It remains undefeated in part because of the dearth of competition, but the many DLC additions and huge list of mods have ensured that even after five years it still has plenty to offer would-be mayors.

There's even an expansion exclusively dedicated to parks. And it turns out that flooding cities with poo doesn't get old. Sorry, citizens! Phil: The city building genre has had something of a resurgence thanks to games like Frostpunk and Anno offering up a different take on the basic formula.

But if you want the best game to actually build a city in, here it is. Katie: I don't think I'll ever get tired of creating vast intertwined city-scapes, ever more intricate intersections, and long-ass roundabouts… so many roundabouts they permeate my dreams.

Help, I'm traffic managing in my sleep. After the on-rails nonsense of the intro, it pretty much sets you free to be the ultimate spy in an amazing sandbox. Rich: Simply one of the best games ever made, a unique take on open world design, and absolutely rammed with things to do. This feels like the game Metal Gear Solid was always building towards: ignore the nonsense about it being unfinished, and enjoy the finest game Kojima Productions ever made. Phil: It's let down slightly by a handful of missions that force you to fight the Parasite Unit—tedious battles that ignore almost all of the established rules of the game.

The rest of the time, though, MGS 5 drops you onto the map with a handful of gadgets and lets you figure things out for yourself. One of the most satisfying stealth sandboxes you can play. Dave: Was having an absolute blast with MGS5's open world; it felt solid, real, and deliciously brutal. But as soon as it got fully into the bloated, ridiculous exposition it immediately pulled me out of the game world and that has meant I can't face going back ever again.

Fraser: Few management games have made me feel like such a monster, but that's what happens when you become a fascist to save a few lives and they freeze to death anyway. The cold and desperation makes you cold and desperate. Frostpunk is a challenging apocalyptic city builder with plenty of engaging systems, but it's the high stakes and brutal consequences of your decisions that makes it special.

And thanks to the DLC, you can also see what life was like just before the big freeze. Spoiler: it was miserable. Chris: I remember getting absolutely furious when my city was running well, I was keeping everyone warm and fed, and I had enough resources to survive, but my citizens were still miserable because they'd heard some rumor that tanked their morale.

It seemed so unfair that I'd done everything right but people still hated me. But then it's a society simulator, isn't it? No matter what you do, you can't make everyone happy, and a portion of any society is going to be filled with people who simply won't use logic or listen to reason. A relevant lesson! Evan: Is Arma a tedious and complicated sim, or a peerless sandbox-playground for unscripted military antics? Years into its lifespan, the franchise's contradiction is potent: onboarding someone into the game means handing them a list of mods they 'absolutely' need to get started and a longer list of unusual keybinds double tap left Alt to freely swivel your neck independently of your weapon, duh.

But at the end of that not-so-basic training awaits a serious and often silly game about riding in a helicopter with a dozen of your closest Discord friends, one of whom crashes that helicopter into a tree after failing to correctly engage the auto-hover. Nat: Remember the first time you took a sledgehammer to a house in Red Faction Guerrilla?

Teardown is that, but pushed to its best extreme. A destruction sandbox where breakable buildings aren't just a backdrop to mediocre gunfights, but instead used to prop up an incredible set of heist puzzles. But oh, that smashing! Teardown may be voxelated, but everything breaks as you'd expect.

Wood buckles under pressure. Plaster cracks to reveal underlying brickwork. Fire spreads as volumetric smoke billows through hallways, and a remarkably efficient approach to ray-tracing makes sure it all looks perfectly tactile. In most levels, you're free to explore and destroy the map as you see fit. You'll have a set number of items to rob briefcases, safes, cars , and once you snag one, the timer starts.

Carve an optimal route through the map, grab the goods, and make it out before the cops arrive. Simple, but nerve-wrackingly brilliant. Beyond that, though, Teardown's exploding mod scene has turned the voxel playground into a brand new Garry's Mod. There's a workshop packed to the brim with new maps to smash up, and a wealth of toys ranging from GMod-style physics guns to miniguns akimbo. Teardown's puzzles are decent fun, but I'll be smashing my way through fan-made maps for a long time yet.

A supernatural mystery, Unavowed throws you into an ancient society of magical problem solvers after a possession ruined your life. It's got big party-based RPG vibes, evoking BioWare games especially, complete with special origin stories and a branching plot that goes to some surprising places. But this is still firmly a 2D point-and-click, where most of your time will be spent solving mysteries and puzzles. And what excellent mysteries and puzzles they are, forcing you to use both magic and your investigative chops to solve.

What lingers, though, are the charming characters and Unavowed's vision of New York—a place simultaneously familiar and utterly alien. Robin: Unavowed feels like a treatise on how the classic style of 2D adventure game can still feel relevant in the modern games industry.

Dave: We finally made it, ma! As the finest long-term RPG on any platform, I'd argue it's a bit too far down the list, but there are still many who foolishly see it as some sort of glorified spreadsheet.

Football is obviously central to the game, which does put people off. But FM is a mix of a sporting version of The Sims, marshalling and developing your little computer people to kick a ball about better than other little computer people, and a heart-wrenching RPG about success, failure, heroism, the fragility of youth, lost potential, and the inevitable decay of our own corporeal forms.

Fraser: Finally! I've been trying to get CoH2 in here for years. The RTS sequel is perhaps a controversial choice, and is certainly more divisive than its predecessor, but the first game has had its time in the sun and on this list. There are plenty of reasons to recommend the sequel, too, especially if you're tired of the Western Front.

One of the main reasons I've been fighting for the swap is the fantastic Ardennes Assault expansion, which features a dynamic turn-based campaign—something Relic is taking even further in the upcoming Company of Heroes 3. Dave: Still think the original is better, but that's probably because I got proper obsessed with the Commando units from the Opposing Fronts expandalone.

Cars are cool and hot and Horizon 4 knows it. Play it as a racing simulation or turn on all the assists and play it like Lego Racer. Or just deck out a van with a Dragonball Z livery and drive it off cliff sides, capturing the poetic footage as it tumbles. Nat: Forza lets me tear down my own backyard in the big daft Halo jeep, which makes it the best racing game ever made as far as I'm concerned.

Fraser: I drove around digital Edinburgh with a friend and pointed out all the places I'd thrown up when I was at university. Perfect game. Jacob: With a decent racing wheel, this game makes you feel like you're the world rally champion and F1 drivers champion all at the same time.

James: A game that bends the rules of space also exists outside of time. Portal 2 is still one of the funniest games ever made. Even if the portal puzzles get easier to parse with every run, I'm always finding new routes and accidentally developing speedrun strats, buoyed by good humor, great performances, and excellent tunes throughout.

If you've yet to play the co-op campaign, do it now. Spec out incredibly complex solutions to simple problems, together. Harry: If you like jokes, games, and puzzles, Portal 2 is essential. It's not a looker by today's standards, of course, but it doesn't need to be. Cleverness, invention, and laughs win over graphics any day. Plus, it'll probably run nicely on your Steam Deck. It's outrageous that Portal 2 has puzzles that make you feel so smart while you're solving them and monologues so funny they make you cackle the whole time you're doing it.

True galaxy brain stuff. Phil: Ubisoft's trade-focused city builder has grown into something remarkable. Over a handful of DLC seasons it's doubled down on the satisfaction of seeing a territory grow by adding a handful of new regions with specific quirks to overcome. In Africa, you'll create canal systems to irrigate the land. In the Arctic, you'll build airships to circumnavigate imposing glaciers.

And back in Europe, you'll expand your docks into a global hub supporting your ever-expanding trade empire. The sheer joy of turning these disparate regions into a fully-autonomous machine of growth and profit is hard to beat, at least until you move to the next tier of technology, and balk at the exponential effort required to get it up and running. A return to form for the series.

Nat: Tony Hawk might've introduced me to skateboarding, but Session understands why I've come to love it. There are no time limits and no high scores: just you, your board, and an urban sandbox to destroy. Session manages to make the simple act of rolling around on your skateboard feel incredible. Controls can be tweaked to be as easy or tough as possible, and it's rare that a game can make the humble ollie feel satisfying.

Challenges that'd be trivial in THPS become hour-long battles as you try to nail a nollie heelflip into a lipslide off the sidewalk. Admittedly, Session is still extremely work-in-progress. Character models are a bit jank, animations bug out, and the physics are often hilariously broken.

But each new update brings a new way to express your skating style, whether it's the introduction of freestyle primo and casper tricks, or a new city block featuring iconic skate spots.

James: Normally, I'd hold back on recommending an early access game, but Session's impressive growth and momentum easily make up for the jank. We've already had a total physics overhaul and an animation overhaul is on the way. New trick systems and levels show up every couple months, and with new publisher Nacon on board, we might see Session pick up even more speed on the way to 1. Harry: Don't be put off by Loop Hero's impenetrable-seeming aesthetic; It's one of the most accessible games I've played in Its nostalgic style belies an absorbing adventure that's wonderfully simple to start, but brutal to master.

You decide the difficulty of your nameless knight's journey by adding monster tiles for more gear and resources, or helpful boons, colouring in the blackness with often surprising results. Take your resources or try for one more loop? For much of I've struggled to choose. Evan: As you said, it's steeped in nostalgia, starting with that CRT "curved screen" filter you can enable in the main menu. And yet it's so different from many of the outwardly nostalgia-based games we see.

Loop Hero isn't a recreation of an old style of game like Stardew Valley. Instead it resurrects the spiritual aspects from the late '80s VGA era, the subtler sense of mystery found in some games from that era. It's most fun if you avoid Googling your way to victory with wikis. Instead, try engaging in the kinds of school lunchroom rumors with a friend who's also playing it, trading stories about how you can summon harpies into the map by building a mountain, or the ridiculous thing you have to do to get a secret boss to spawn.

Fraser: I started playing Loop Hero because I thought it would be a distillation of RPG adventures that took only a wee while to play through. Morgan: Paradise Killer takes the most classically compelling premise in literary history there's been a murder, you have to solve it and places it in one of the strangest, most interesting videogame worlds I've ever explored.

Piecing together timelines and motives while interrogating characters named Doctor Doom Jazz or Lydia Day Break never gets old. It's a visual novel for people that don't think they'd be into visual novels. A true sleeper hit. Andy K: What makes it really special for me is its openness.

This is a detective game where you can find evidence in any order and construct your case at your own pace. The order you find these clues in—and the conclusions you draw from them—can totally reshape your perception of the crime and who did it, including pinning the crime on an innocent person and having to live with your shoddy detective work.

Fraser: Chivalry 2 lets you chop off someone's limbs, pick them up, and then use them to beat someone else to death—all while you're screaming, they're screaming, everyone just won't stop screaming. They're really screams of joy, though, because this multiplayer medieval combat romp is just so damn fun.

Tyler: It's great. I love the balance of serious sword combat and silliness, where swing selection and mouse technique are being carefully considered just a few feet away from players who are smashing the 'yell' key repeatedly and chucking objects into the fray like Philadelphia sports fans. In places, Chiv 2 really delivers on the full medieval warfare experience it promises.

Climbing up a ladder and over the edge of a rampart is always thrilling. I can't wait for the horse update. Evan: It's the closest thing to a toxicity-proof competitive game I've played. The slapstick dark comedy of severed limbs and fish-as-weapons is part of it—that stuff makes Chivalry 2 feel lighthearted—but I also think that, unlike the serious, methodical, 5v5 formats in games like CS:GO, you sort of accept that a fray of dozens of people swinging their variously-long metal dicks around is going to be a messy affair.

Balance isn't the point. It's the calamity and fun of facing down three knights in an "unfair" fight and somehow walking away, and then laughing it off when a ballista pegs your body against the castle wall.

More competitive multiplayer games could learn from that. Wes: GTA Online's heists are still some of the most intricate co-op gaming you can do today. Rockstar's online infrastructure is terrible, though.

Unfortunately, so will all the hackers and griefers that tried to ruin our fun. Phil: GTA Online tends to get all the attention these days, but there's a quality campaign here too—huge in scope, albeit saddled with some of Rockstar's most cynical writing to-date.

The mod scene is wild , too. Steven: It's still wild to me that Genshin Impact basically came out of nowhere and rocked the gaming world. Player housing, new territories, and a bunch of new characters—it's crazy how good this free game is. Morgan: Technically free, yea.

Its gacha money making tactics were overbearing enough to turn me off, and I'm the lucky type that's not compelled to keep spending money. Steven: I mean, it doesn't gate your progress in any way. You only have to spend the money if you want to, and there's no banners or pop-ups pestering you either. Mollie: I get you Morgan, gacha games can be off-putting with their monetisation.

But I view Genshin Impact like a monthly MMO subscription—a little bit of money each month for some currency or extra goodies is no more than what I'd pay to play Final Fantasy I hadn't actually played Genshin for a few months when we made this list, but I recently got back into it with the release of 2. Just like Steven said, I can't believe this is a game that you can technically play free of charge.

Teyvat is a gorgeous world, with each region bringing its own unique flavour and culture. Combat is seriously satisfying, too—combining the different elemental abilities of characters and firing off all manner of reactions never stops being fun.

Sure it's a little grindy sometimes, but what live service game isn't these days? James: I bounced off Prey a couple of times, but once I accepted that you're always on the back foot it clicked.

This is Resident Evil in space, but you choose what kind of key you want to unlock the next door with: hacking, secret vent pathways, or turning into a banana and sliding through a tiny hole in the wall. Jody: Prey's space station being a contiguous space, one you explore inside and out so thoroughly it's ridiculous, makes it the System Shock 3 of my dreams.

You can hop into space, jetting around in zero-gravity to find alternate routes. There's so much detail, so much to learn.

This supernatural Sniper Elite spinoff series is extremely popular with a niche group of gamers who enjoy blowing the heads off scores of the Nazi undead. It's a creepy, fun throwback to the s and s zombie horror hits, with the Sniper Elite X-Ray kill-cam functionality tossed in for laughs. Zombie Army 4 is currently an Epic Store exclusive, and it's one title that makes the platform a lot more attractive at a second glance.

If you relish the idea of 4 player sniper co-op against legions of the infected, then lock and load. The Far Cry series has become notorious for introducing AI enemies who were so vigilant that they could spot the hero from the other side of the map.

Since then, the sequels have gotten more reasonable in that regard with a greater focus on survival and stealth. The series continues with the latest entry from Ubisoft, Far Cry 6. With the star power and talent of Giancarlo Esposito as the main villain and an insurgency backdrop, this entry is geared to be packed to the seams with action and intensity.

You're caught in the middle of a conflict with no peace in sight unless you're willing to fight for it. This cinematic-style franchise is sure to satisfy your mafia cravings in the absence of The Sopranos or the Godfather trilogy. What better way to experience the world of the criminal elite than by doing so legally? It beats an indictment and 50 years in the clink! All three games are featured in this trilogy pack in their Definitive Editions, which means it's the best way to experience them all over again, or for the first time.

Talk about an offer you can't refuse! If you haven't purchased Grand Theft Auto V yet, then what's stopping you? Few games can match the level of detail, sophistication, and an immense amount of content as Rockstar's premiere flagship title. Though it's been out for years at this point, GTA V continues to sell like crazy. The inclusion of the GTA Online mode adds a ton of replay value to an already gigantic game. Free-to-play games can be difficult to examine since it's easy to become swayed by a nonexistent price tag and seemingly limitless content.

The problem is that the more popular it gets, the harder it gets to maintain which causes problems to arise. For Genshin Impact by miHoYo, it seems to be holding true and offering a lot. The game already looks quite impressive with its quality visuals and gameplay but says even more with its simple objective: Explore. You arrive from another world with the goal to find your family and to use whatever powers and friends you have and find along the way to discover as much as you can.

RDR2 got its fair share of praise when it hit consoles, but only on PC has it reached its full potential. A host of graphical options turns one of Rockstar's most beautiful games into a fully immersive experience. Make sure your graphics card has the juice, however. While the new lighting and graphical options might be a thing of beauty, many of them are GPU-intensive. If your rig can handle it, you'll experience something truly amazing. It might just be one of the best video games of all time.

And, though it has two decades of history behind it, the newest entry, Halo Infinite, is not a lazy attempt to cash in on a beloved name. Instead, it delivers the kind of sublime FPS experience you would want out of a Halo game, complete with the return of Master Chief. Ultra-violence and constant motion meet in this post-apocalyptic dystopian game. The game is set in Dharma Tower, a sort-of last refuge for humanity, where you ascend the tower through platforming and katana-induced carnage to take revenge on a ruthless ruler.

You do so by slicing up your enemies, dodging bullets, and using a number of unique abilities to continue making your way to the top. This is the kind of game that will leave you out of breath just playing it. Supergiant Games has made a name for itself thanks to the great reception that Pyre, Transistor, and, most recently, Bastion has received. This roguelike dungeon crawler has a few new features up its sleeve.

This leads to a sense of progression that makes for a very addictive game. The creative team at Remedy Entertainment made sure to pack this title with plenty to love, paying very close attention to the intricate details.

A deeply cinematic game, this action-adventure offers its players staggering visuals, inspired environment design and brilliant performances — not to mention, a deeply satisfying combat experience. Control places you in the capable shoes of fiery-haired Jesse Faden. If you ever wondered what Groundhog Day would look like in-game form, wonder no more. Deathloop , from the makers of the Dishonored series, gives the first-person shooter a fun little twist with some added strategy.

And, to break the loop, you have to kill eight targets before the day ends; otherwise, you start over. Read the full review: Microsoft Flight Simulator. Hitman 3 closes out the rebooted trilogy with another gorgeous entry that hews close to what makes these games so unique. Just like the previous games, Hitman 3 's maps will take you all over the world from Dubai and England to China and more.

As Agent 47, you play a calm and calculating hitman whose job is not to run and gun through a mob of bad guys as most games would have you do. Instead, you move around large maps like an English manor to find and eliminate your targets quietly and undetected.

As porter Sam Bridges, you bravely traverse an apocalyptic United States to deliver valuable cargo, navigating lands overrun by terrorists, bandits and these invisible creatures called Beached Things.

The media channel was also very responsive in updating the public about the pandemic in other countries to raise public awareness about the seriousness of COVID Responding to the situation, many firms and influential individuals contributed to providing medical facilities and accommodation that helped to streamline the campaign.

Some hotels also devoted rooms to be quarantine centers to solve the problems caused by a shortage of accommodation Tran and Michael Besides the prompt response and detailed actions for being less of a burden on the healthcare and medical systems, the Vietnamese government had solutions for mitigating damages to the economy in both the medium and long term.

To maintain the percentage of growth, the government introduced a number of measures, namely the deferral of taxes and charges, additional financial support for the most vulnerable and tax credit incentives. The Vietnamese government also showed their compassion to students living abroad and Vietnamese who had been infected seriously while living in other countries and regions worldwide, by welcoming them home. These people were sent to institutional quarantine and had their health looked after by military and medical staff.

With limited capacities in infrastructure facilities, quarantine centers were usually dormitories located in suburban areas next to big cities. Despite many strategies for preventing the spread of the pandemic and its impacts on the economic growth, the tourism and hospitality industry was the most severely affected. In the first 3 months of , the General Statistics Office reported a drop of Many tourism firms have had to switch to a hibernation mode due to canceled travel plans. Small and large hotels have also shut down which has caused food and beverage sectors to be impacted negatively as a result.

A large number of employees in these sectors have lost their jobs and considered starting their careers in other paths to resolve their financial difficulties, which may worsen the situation of the human resource shortage for the tourism and hospitality industry in the long term. Many mid-range and luxurious hotels and resorts volunteered to be quarantine service centers in order to respond to the shortage of facilities, service staff, and accommodation for quarantine.

This proposal can be considered beneficial for all parties. Pressure could be lessened for the healthcare system; demand for more comfortable accommodation with better service quality could be satisfied for the quarantined people who were willing to pay for the services, and service operation could be maintained for the hotels to help them survive over the pandemic Tang et al. Local governments will consider authorizing the hotels and resorts that have met the necessary health and sanitation standards required to be quarantine centers.

When people arrived at the airport, they were asked for a declaration of health and a medical check; afterwards, before transferring them to quarantine centers, they would be asked if they wished for quarantine with service fees. People who wished to pay for the services would be looked after well by both the service staff of the hotel and also with the cooperation of the local government. For instance, regular security checks were made throughout the day and night by the local police, and guidance was given in operating qualified quarantine by local medical centers.

The hotels and resorts which offered to be quarantine centers had to be transparent about their service fees, ensuring that they had the healthcare service quality, hygiene, and the related services that were required by the government Tang et al. The quarantined people could register for these hotel services, and the service fees could be paid online. Rooms and facilities were strictly required to be sterilized, located closely to social areas in the hotels such as kitchens, dining rooms, staff rooms, and so on.

Beds had to be kept two meters apart from each other with no air conditioning in a spacious room, and a comfortable ambiance had to be ensured. Service staff had to be well trained to ensure the effectiveness of both the healthcare and hospitality services.

The hotels had to keep monitoring via CCTV, recording, and then keep reporting to ensure that daily updates were sent to local healthcare government HanoiTimes Given that the outbreak of Covid and the remedies created to prevent transmission, such as travel restrictions and social distancing, have created severe challenges for the hotel industry, a response strategy has become the most important topic for the hospitality organizations.

Although the Covid pandemic has been delivering its negative impacts for nearly a year, there is still a scarcity of effective response strategies for the hospitality industry. The main purpose of these strategies is help hotel organizations continue their operation to survive in the market.

If they fail to offer the alternative services to customers, retain employees, the implications may lead to their collapse. Finally, other fundamental concepts such as collaboration network, value network, value co-creation, and resource integration are essential for accessing changes in hospitality services.

This aspect is crucial because the case hotel in this study is set up as a quarantine service center, which not only helps this hotel to have a stable source of income from people in quarantine, but also supports the authority to respond to the shortage of facilities, service staff, and accommodation for quarantine.

As a result, we believe that S-D logic is eminently appropriate to provide the background and framework for this response strategy made by our case hotel organization. A large and growing body of case-based research has explored how hotels have responded to the crisis in a particular context e.

Although the use of a single-case study makes it harder to generalize, it offers empirically rich, holistic features of how a case hotel successfully responded to the COVID crisis, facilitating the relevance of broader research.

A critical case was defined. In Flyvbjerg , p. Our intention for the case hotel selection adopted a similar idea, and there are three fundamental determinants that facilitated the crisis response for the COVID pandemic in Viehost. First, leaders of Viehost initiated and actively supported the establishment of hospitality services for paid quarantine guests.

Hence, the Vietnamese government called for support from private sectors to share this burden with the government, and Viehost is one of seven hotels that has been initially selected for developing the paid quarantine service. Finally, the conditions of the facilities in institutional quarantine places cannot satisfy the needs of tourists and foreigners, who prefer to be quarantined in places with good facilities. Since the Viehost hotel is located in the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh City, the biggest city in Vietnam, and it is just 40 km from the international airport with good hospitality facilities, it can be easily tracked and monitored by the local government.

Fields were defined by Bourdieu and Nice , p. The economic capital, such as organizational resources and time, may be directly transformed into advantages and can be formalized as facilities or rights of ownership.

The cultural capital, in itself, has considerable breadth in regard to the various forms in which power comes from such factors as, for example, the time-assimilated knowledge, academic qualification, and intellectual property. In Bourdieu , p. In the words of Bourdieu , capitals are dynamic capabilities in a specific social environment. Put differently, the use of capital represents how an organization prioritizes resources and intellectual connections over time.

Bourdieu , p. Viehost is located in the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh city, the biggest city in Vietnam; it is 40 km from the international airport, and its location is easily tracked and monitored by the local government.

The hotel has rooms in three buildings and a full range of amenities, including a restaurant and a coffee shop in each building. The hotel employed around full-time staff members in January In February , when Wuhan was put into lockdown, and case numbers in China increased to around 80, by mid-February European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control , the Vietnamese government recommended travel restrictions for foreign visitors, especially those arriving from China.

In terms of the human labor force required to run the hotel, the number of full-time employees dropped from to just 56 in March Since the first COVID case was confirmed in Vietnam on 23rd January , leaders of Viehost prepared a response plan as well as contacting the local government for support. In early March, the plan for preparing a paid quarantine service was promoted by the Vietnamese government and Viehost began to prepare a proposal and submit it to become one of first hotels to pilot this service.

In the third week of March, Viehost was one of eight hotels in Vietnam that was allowed to introduce paid quarantine service beside the current response strategies that were already being practiced in Viehost. As soon as their proposal was accepted, Viehost immediately contacted suppliers, business partners, and the local government to ensure that the required resources were ready for them to develop the paid quarantine service.

Data were gathered from hotel leaders and managers, i. Interviews with leaders and senior managers of Viehost were used in the collection of data. In the case of Viehost, research participants included both leaders and other managers from a variety of divisions of Viehost in order to provide multi-layered perspectives from intra-organization.

NVivo10 software was used to transcribe and code the interviews for developing main themes and sub-themes. Although the open-coding approaches associated the subjectivity of coders, the utilities of several in-depth semi-structured interviews from a case hotel allowed researchers to compare different perspectives on the same field Bryman There was no pre-stated quota of sample size for the investigation.

All of the interviews were audio-recorded and paraphrased with the acceptance of the interviewees, and this information was turned into transcripts. In order to deal with the problems of subjectivity in interpretation and a biased member check, feedback was utilized for verifying the credibility of the information.

Access to a participating hotel was granted on the understanding that the research results would be published anonymously.

There is no doubt that COVID has created a crisis in multiple areas for the Vietnam hotel industry in general, and for our case in particular. However, the paid quarantine approach alongside other response strategies can be perceived as the salvage in this crisis period which can even open up future business opportunities.

For quarantine preparation, Viehost committed itself to the role and responsibilities of ensuring health and safety for both its customers and its staff. Before the first guests began to be imposed to quarantine in the Viehost, this hotel was conscious of ensuring the health and safety for all of its customers and staff.

The hotel cleaned all of the rooms used for guests, as well as all other areas. The GDPM required Viehost to increase the frequency of its cleaning and to use sanitizing chemicals once a day in public areas and two to three times a day in areas used for quarantined guests. In addition, other medical and sanitation procedures were required by GDPM such as using plastic to cover the buttons in the elevators, cleaning fans in lifts, the steaming of all mattresses and carpets in the hotels.

But what was happening inside those massage rooms was not a massage — it was sexual abuse. Calling it a massage was a ruse, a ruse designed to get young girls to touch Epstein, an excuse for Epstein to touch the girls. The handbook also insisted on discretion about the privacy of Epstein, Maxwell and their guests, as detailed on Page If the caller is insistent, you simply ask to take: a message, a time and a number, where the caller can be reached.

Do not be bullied and do not show any reaction or impatience, simply be firm. Prosecutors alleged that the handbook and various rules were used to establish a climate of silence and secrecy. The former couple announced their separation after 16 years together. The ophthalmic part of the trigeminal nerve supplies sensation to the cornea, ciliary body, lachrymal glands, conjunctiva, nasal mucosa, and the skin of the nose, eyelid, and forehead.

The maxillary part of the trigeminal nerve innervates the middle third of the face, the side of the nose, the lower eyelid, and upper teeth. The mandibular part of the trigeminal nerve supplies sensation to the lower third of the face, the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, the oral mucosa of the mouth, and the lower teeth.

Infections and some malignancies e. One-third of patients with intracavernous carotid aneurysms have trigeminal sensory ganglion manifestations because of the close approximations of these structures.

Also, an expanding pituitary adenoma also can spread laterally through the cavernous sinus to secondarily cause a mass effect on the trigeminal sensory ganglion. Root entry zone. The sensory part of the trigeminal nerve just as it enters the pons is called the root entry zone. At this level, vascular anomalies, such as arteriovenous malformations and tumors, and inflammatory or infectious conditions, such as sarcoidosis, viral encephalitis, herpes, and Lyme disease, can affect cranial nerve V.

Spinal sensory trigeminal tract. All tracts from the sensory trigeminal ganglion project to nuclei in the brainstem. In the brainstem, the sensory part of the trigeminal nerve ganglion has three nuclei. The fibers of one of them spinal sensory carry pain and temperature sensation from the face. The spinal sensory trigeminal tract extends into the cervical cord. This explains why some patients with upper cervical disc herniation or occlusion of the vertebral artery can present with trigeminal sensory neuropathy.

Multiple sclerosis, glioma, and infarction are the most common cervical cord or brainstem lesions that cause trigeminal symptoms.

The rare patient has developed herpes encephalitis from a retrograde extension of a herpes simplex infection from the trigeminal nerve ganglion to the brainstem. Normally, there should be no jaw tremor, involuntary chewing, or trismus clenching of teeth. Motor division. The patient should be able to symmetrically and tightly clench the teeth, and the mandible should be midline.

If there is motor weakness, the jaw will deviate to the weak side and central median incisors will not be aligned. Increased symmetrical closure rate reflects an upper motor neuron lesion in the same way that hyperactivity of other muscle stretch reflexes suggests an upper motor neuron lesion. The patient should be able to feel the touch of a sterile sharp object on the oral mucosa, jaw, cheek, and forehead. To test the corneal reflex, the cornea of one eye is touched with a cotton wisp, and normally there should be a bilateral blinking response.

Tactile insensitivity that splits the midline and also bilaterally asymmetric vibratory sensation are often considered psychogenic or hysterical signs, but the evidence does not support this. Facial motor activity is often abnormal in neuropsychiatric conditions. Facial movements that are impaired on command but intact during spontaneous expressive movement reflect pyramidal tract pathology, while the opposite dissociation can reflect pathology in several other cortical and subcortical systems.

Subtle facial asymmetry is common without demonstrable pathology. Facial asymmetry or other signs of facial motor weakness are seen in 3 to 5 percent of patients with schizophrenia, compared with less than one percent of healthy people. Pain behind the ear may precede paralysis by 24 to 48 hours. There can be a transient up to two weeks loss of the sensation of taste. One side of the face becomes paralyzed for both voluntary and involuntary movement , and the forehead is affected as much as the lower face.

Incomplete paralysis in the first week is the most favorable prognostic sign. At the age of 17 he attempted suicide and was hospitalized. Other disorders that affect the motor functioning of cranial nerve VII include tumors that invade the temporal bone, fracture of the temporal bone, Ramsay-Hunt syndrome which is herpes zoster of the geniculate gangion that presents with severe facial palsy associated with a vesicular eruption in the external auditory canal , acoustic neuromas, and dilatations of the basilar artery from aneurysms, leprosy, and infectious mononucleosis.

Infectious mononucleosis can present with multiple or single cranial palsies of acute onset, with bilateral facial paralysis being the most common combination.

Also, some elderly patients develop an involuntary recurrent spasm of both eyelids as an isolated phenomenon. Differential diagnosis. Facial hemiatrophy occasionally presents with an associated severe facial pain caused by displacement of the trigeminal sensory nerves resulting in trigeminal neuralgia cranial nerve V.

Facial hemiatrophy is actually a form of lipodystrophy. The emotional impact of facial deformities. Patients who possess or believe they possess facial deformities are often severely impacted. It was the pain from that, from feeling ugly, that I always viewed as the great tragedy of my life.

The fact that I had cancer seemed minor in comparison. Relationship to the ear. Because of its close approximation to the temporal bone, the peripheral part of the facial nerve VII is involved in many conditions that affect that bone, which often also affect the ear.

These conditions include congenital anomalies, degenerative disorders, infections, and neoplasms. Embryologic development. The facial nerve develops embryologically from tissue that also gives rise to the acoustic nerve cranial nerve VIII. Since it leaves the brainstem at the pontomedullary junction near the acoustic nerve cranial nerve VIII , a vestibular schwannoma can affect the facial nerve as well as the acoustic nerve.

The motor division of the facial nerve develops embryologically near the middle ear and eventually elongates and travels through a canal in the temporal bone near the structures of the ear.

Incomplete development of this canal may contribute to the facial palsies sometimes associated with otitis media. The sensory fibers of the facial nerve nervus intermedius , which respond to taste, also have their cell bodies in a sensory ganglion located near the inner ear. Cranial nerve VII originates in four nuclei in the pons and medulla.

In c , Property is an extension of the class variable. It provides a mechanism to read, write, or change the class variable's value without affecting the external way of accessing it in our applications. In c , properties can contain one or two code blocks called accessors, and those are called a get accessor and set accessor. By using get and set accessors, we can change the internal implementation of class variables and expose it without affecting the external way of accessing it based on our requirements.

Generally, in object-oriented programming languages like c you need to define fields as private and then use properties to access their values in a public way with get and set accessors. Following is the syntax of defining a property with get and set accessor in c programming language. If you observe the above syntax, we used an access modifier and return type to define a property along with get and set accessors to make required modifications to the class variables based on our requirements.

Here, the get accessor code block will be executed whenever the property is read, and the code block of set accessor will be executed whenever the property is assigned to a new value. Following is the simple example of defining a private variable and a property in the c programming language.

Here, the value keyword in set accessor is used to define a value that is being assigned by set accessor. You can return an int from the Main method by defining the method in one of the following ways:. If the return value from Main is not used, returning void or Task allows for slightly simpler code.

This example uses. NET Core command-line tools. If you are unfamiliar with. NET Core command-line tools, you can learn about them in this get-started article.

Create a new application by running dotnet new console. Modify the Main method in Program. When a program is executed in Windows, any value returned from the Main function is stored in an environment variable. You can build the application using the dotnet CLI dotnet build command. Next, create a PowerShell script to run the application and display the result. Paste the following code into a text file and save it as test.

Run the PowerShell script by typing test. Because the code returns zero, the batch file will report success. However, if you change MainReturnValTest. When you declare an async return value for Main , the compiler generates the boilerplate code for calling asynchronous methods in Main. If you don't specify the async keyword, you need to write that code yourself, as shown in the following example.

Note: If there is no IP address listed in the Property, the connection you selected in step 5 may not be the Windows address you are using to connect you to the Internet. Make sure this is the right connection. Tip : Recording your default IP port is a good idea, if you want to avoid repeating these steps the next time you need it.

You can now use the default gateway IP address to troubleshoot the connection you may encounter, to access your router or perform any other tasks that you think of. The ipconfig command is a very effective tool for quick access to your default gateway IP address:. Note : There is no distance between 'ip' and 'config', there is no switch or other option. Depending on your version of Windows, how many network adapters and connections, and how to configure your computer, you can get something very simple or very complicated.

What you are looking for is the IP address listed as Default Gateway below the title for the connection you are interested in. See step 5 in the above process if you are not sure which connection is important. As you can see, the default port for Ethernet connection is listed as This is also what you are looking for, for whatever connection you care about.

If there is too much information to consider, you can try executing ipconfig findstr 'Default Gateway' instead. It significantly changes the data returned in the Command Prompt window. However, this method is only useful if you know that you only have one active connection because many connections will display their default ports, without any additional context of connecting them to be applied.

On MacOS computers, there are two ways to find the default port: Via a graphical program and through the command line. The easiest way to locate the default Mac port is through System Preferences. Click on the Internet and locate the IP address next to the Router. Another way to find the default port of a Mac is to use the following netstat command:. It will try to probe the network for the default port from the web browser, so it also works on the desktop.

In addition, the has an interesting way of sorting the files when you open Custom POIs. It first sorts in order of the creation of the subdirectory, not in alphabetic order. The POI files then show alphabetic after that. A subdirectory created at AM will come before a subdirectory created at AM, regardless it's name.

I use this quirk to make sure that files that I want to access readily are put at the beginning. Red Light Cameras are tied to a proximity alert, so I don't have to access that file. The result of 3D printing terrain is based on quality of the 3D file. I have some work ahead of me to get my designs ready for the printer. But, you get the idea.

Below are some examples of 3D models that I printed from a Kickstarter Campaign that had rewards with 3D files of terrain pieces. You can check out Thunder Chrome 3D printable terrain pieces here. By the way, Amazon even sells 3D printed terrain from different vendors, which are cheaper than a lot of the plastic model kits you might find. Though, you should shop for the better quality pieces. With 3D files, you can enlarge or shrink terrain pieces for these miniature tabletop games as needed.

Just be aware that at a certain point, the size of the details will determine whether they will appear properly on your 3D printed piece. Now, there are a ton of ways you can take found material around your home, or workplace, and turn it into useful terrain and buildings. A knife to cut, a metal ruler to make straight edges, a surface that you can use for cutting, and glue. For scratch-building with paper based material , however, I recommend either PVA white glue, or a hot glue gun.

The hot glue gun that I have is one of the larger sized ones. The best knives for cutting card board are utility knives. They are affordable, and come with disposable blades. They are super sharp out of the box and take to cardboard like…cliche incoming… a hot knife through butter. Sure an exacto-hobby type knife might give you more precision, but what you really want is a good grip on that handle.

Most hobby knives have thin barrels, e. Card board is one of the most damaging materials to a sharp knife. Card board will dull out any knife super fast.

I sharpen my utility knife blades on it. And, in some cases, I think my utility knives end up sharper than they came from the factory! Just apply blade at the proper angle, and after a few even swipes on both sides that blade will sing through card board.

I prefer to create by eye-balling dimensions. I feel this frees my mind up toward the creating process. I want to make sure my troopers with 30mm diameter bases can actually fit through doorways, stand on steps, or stay put on walkways. To start making terrain, I generally take stock of what materials I have and ask myself what I could potentially make with it all.

This probably means 90 degree angles. Create boxes of different heights and footprint size. Add details, like windows, and rooftop elements.

Air ducts and chimneys provide cover and line-of-sight blocking objects. When I work with cardboard, I use the hot glue gun so I can move fast.

Hot glue bonds within seconds of hitting the card board material. This allows me to work quickly to build up those big shapes. Within a few minutes I can crank out a bunch of boxes and urban-looking sets that can stack together to form a city tabletop board. A good tip to strengthen any card board or paper-based material is to cover every surface with a coat of watered-down PVA glue.

Simply mix a ratio of glue to water and use a large brush to cover the final terrain pieces. Let that dry and the glue will fill pores and harden the overall structure. To add further realism and strength to a scratch built terrain piece, you can use DAS clay. DAS clay is a fast-drying clay that is awesome for terrain building. You can mold it, cover your buildings and terrain, and once hardened, paint it. You can even carve texture into the clay before it has hardened. You merely take clay carving tool like these , and you can create bricks or realistic stonework.

For buildings with roofing and other detail elements, you can use cardboard scraps, bit of foam, plasticard, card stock, and wooden coffee stirrers. Not all wargaming terrain needs to be urban, or human made. In fact, most pitched battles do play out on fields with natural formations, such as hills and rocky cliffs. If you play games like Warhammer 40k or Age of Sigmar, natural phenomena on alien planets or other-worldly realms might be more in line with your scenario.

The principles of making natural terrain pieces is the same as for buildings. Start thinking about big blocks with larger footprints. Then, move to the medium size shapes and stack them up. The one I have is really affordable. There are better, more elaborate hot wire foam cutters , e. Also I should mention, that all these techniques work well for making doll houses if you have a kid like me.

When you want to make your own wargaming terrain, there are several ways you can go about it. You can use reference guides, like books, 3D model and print your terrain, or improvise and scratch build. Best of all, terrain making is fun, inexpensive, and effective.
